Changes to our buses in Harrogate from Sunday 23 July

14-07-2017

From Sunday 23 July, we're making changes to some of our buses in and around Harrogate.

24 Harrogate - Pateley Bridge

Following your feedback, and thanks to consultation and support from DalesBus, we've made the decision at short notice to continue running the 24 to the current Sunday timetable up until Sunday 24 September. Buses will continue to leave Harrogate at 0905, 1105, 1405 and 1635, returning from Pateley Bridge at 1000, 1200, 1500 and 1730.

Like many rural bus services, the 24 has been losing money for many years: in several other areas of England, country bus routes have disappeared altogether as travel patterns change.

We've tried several ways to increase passenger numbers at quieter times, including boosting awareness of the service with dedicated buses carrying more visible branding, running services later in the evening, and offering promotional fares.

Following our review, we carefully considered options including withdrawing completely from the route, reducing it by half to a two-hourly service, or withdrawing those journeys carrying fewer than five people a trip on average.

We've chosen the third option, to withdraw the last weekday journey leaving Harrogate at 6.30pm, and to run Sunday buses only from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in September. The 7am and 7.40am departures from Pateley Bridge will also be combined into one departure, leaving Pateley Bridge at 7.20am. This will affect the least number of customers - our plan is to keep the 24 on the road at the times when most people use it.

We're certainly not giving up on the 24. We'll soon be introducing 'as new' revitalised buses with new seating, free Wi-Fi and USB power on-board, and we'll be introducing a new brand to further raise its profile alongside enhanced marketing and promotion. We're also keen to listen to customers with constructive suggestions on how to boost numbers using the 24, and we remain in discussions with several interested parties, such as the Nidderdale Chamber of Trade and DalesBus, to examine what can be done to improve the service further.

62 Keighley - Otley - Harrogate

Last year, the 62 was extended to run all the way to Harrogate, from Keighley, Ilkley and Otley.

Unfortunately, since then, there haven't been enough people using the 62 between Otley and Harrogate to sustain this part of the route any longer.

So, from 23 July, the 62 will no longer run through to Harrogate, and will revert back to running only between Keighley, Ilkley and Otley.

770 & 771 Harrogate - Wetherby - Leeds

It's time for an upgrade on the 770 & 771.

Newer, better buses are coming to the 770 & 771 from 23 July, equipped with free WiFi and USB power at every seat as standard. These buses are smarter than anything you've ever seen before on these routes - with plush designer interiors, comfy seats, and a 'next stop' info system on board.

We're also bringing you new route numbers to make things even simpler - look out for the 70 & 71 from 23 July.
